Horse sculpture off to Goodwood

A 30ft bronze sculpture of a horse’s head is to be unveiled in the south today in preparation for the opening of Glorious Goodwood.

The monumental sculpture Artemis will be installed at the highest point on the Trundle in the Goodwood Estate on the South Downs.

The four-tonne artwork will then be moved into the members’ lawn in time for the first day of the racing event, which starts on July 27 and is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors.

Installing the sculpture involves a precarious journey up a steep track, with the giant horse being reversed into place using a 60ft flatbed lorry.

Sculptor Nic Fiddian-Green designed the horse last autumn and it had to to be finished in time for this year’s flat racing season.

After the racing event, Artemis will move to the front of the house for the inaugural Vintage event at the Goodwood Festival in August.
